About Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia, which is an overall term that covers a wide range of specific medical conditions. Dementia is not a normal part of the ageing process: it is a group of disorders caused by abnormal brain changes.

There is no cure. Dementia is always fatal.

Dementia, which is primarily caused by Alzheimer’s disease, is the second leading cause of death in Australia.

For women, dementia is already the leading cause of death in Australia. Nearly two-thirds of people who die from dementia are female.

The sharp increase in dementia-related deaths over the past 10 years serves as a reminder of the urgent need to fund medical research to find effective ways to prevent, treat, and manage this devastating disease.
